Dr. Christopher Lawhorne / Member-at-large
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1990, Chris Lawhorne discovered his passion for music at the age of eight after watching an episode of Arthur. Inspired by Arthur's courage in playing "Für Elise" despite a mistake, Chris began teaching himself piano on an old Korg keyboard salvaged from a dumpster. With encouragement from his elementary music teachers, Chris honed his skills and developed a deep love for creating music.
His musical path continued through middle school, where he transitioned to percussion under the guidance of dedicated mentors. Winning a first-place medal in musical composition and earning a spot in the All-State Band fueled his growing ambition.
High school brought new challenges and opportunities. As a member of the Sequoyah High School Band, Chris excelled in both marching and concert programs, even composing a major work that earned top honors. Despite academic struggles, his talent and dedication led him to Reinhardt College.
While at Reinhardt, Chris studied Music Education and formed a lifelong bond with his mentor, Dr. David Gregory. He was awarded the opportunity to compose for and conduct both the Reinhardt Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Band. Chris also served as the Collegiate Student President of CNAfME. During one of the many clinic Reinhardt offered, Chris connected with Col. Lowell Graham, leading to an invitation to study in El Paso, TX.
Chris initially pursued a Master of Music in composition at the University of Texas at El Paso but soon missed playing in ensembles. His passion for conducting grew, and he took lessons with Dr. Ron Hufstader, earning his degree in 2015. During his time there, Chris served as a Teaching Assistant for the Marching Miner Regiment and Band Programs, setting the stage for his future career.
After completing his degree, Chris became the Associate Director of Bands at Captain John L. Chapin High School, where he served for six years. Under his direction, the Symphonic Band achieved its first sweepstakes, the marching band became a regional finalist, and he founded the district's first scholastic drumline. This drumline went on to compete at state contests, winning championships in the Winterguard Arizona circuit. Chris later transformed the group into the Independent Drumline known as Sun City Sound, achieving similar success.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Chris left his position at Chapin High School and pursued a terminal degree at the University of Alabama. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant to the Million Dollar Band and Band Programs, he designed the visual marching curriculum, cultivated sound design for the Front Ensemble, and directed the Concert and University Bands. Chris was awarded his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting in May of 2024.
Chris now resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he serves as the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His hopes are to share his passion for music through performance and teaching.
